Exploring Java and Komodo
with Plataran Indonesia

On this trip I moved from Indonesia's temple-dotted plains in Central Java to volcanic highlands in the east, and finally to the salt air and island silhouettes of Komodo – and Plataran was the thread connecting it all.

Each Plataran property I visited was completely different, but each stay felt connected to its setting, which is exactly what you want in a country like Indonesia. I visited several of them back-to-back, so it was interesting to see how the experience shifted from place to place. Here’s a look at how my trip unfolded and what stood out along the way.

First stop was Plataran Borobudur Resort & Spa, where you’re surrounded by farmland and distant mountains, just ten minutes from Borobudur Temple. In the early morning, the air is cool and the fields are often veiled in mist. From certain villas, you can see the temple rising in the distance, which offers a constant reminder of where you are.

The private pool villas are spacious and comfortable, with an easy indoor–outdoor flow that suits the climate. The design feels distinctly Javanese, with carved timber details, local stone and traditional touches that reflect the region’s heritage. There’s a relaxed feel to the resort, nothing is overly formal. The Pavilion restaurant, set within a heritage-style building, was a real highlight, with beautiful Indonesian dishes and an intimate atmosphere. There is also a small spa on site, ideal after early temple visits.

Its location and sense of space make it a strong base for exploring Borobudur and the surrounding villages.

Borobudur: Mornings in the Mist

Bromo: Fire and Ash at Sunrise

Mount Bromo was one of the most striking moments of the trip.

Staying at Plataran Bromo places you within easy reach of the national park. During the day, we drove by 4x4 across the vast “sand sea”, an expanse of volcanic ash that feels almost lunar. From there, it’s a steady climb up to the crater rim. As you ascend, you can hear the low rumble from within before you see the smoke rising from the crater itself. The climb is manageable, but you feel it in your legs. Returning to a hot shower and a treatment later that afternoon felt well earned.

The following morning was a completely different experience. Before dawn, another 4x4 took us to a viewpoint overlooking Bromo from a distance. As the light slowly lifted, layers of peaks emerged through drifting cloud and the scale of the landscape revealed itself. It was well worth the early alarm.

The Plataran Bromo is the most comfortable option in the area and works particularly well as a two-night stay combined with Borobudur. The higher-category suites offer generous space and sweeping views of the surrounding hills, which make those early starts much easier.

From Java, I flew to Labuan Bajo, gateway to Komodo National Park.

Plataran Komodo Resort & Spa sits in its own sheltered bay, just 15 minutes from the airport yet removed from the bustle of the harbour. The villas are detached and set along the coast, with a simple, traditional style that suits the setting. Natural timber, woven textiles and open terraces give it an easy, coastal feel. It feels intimate and easy to navigate, with restaurant, jetty and villas all within easy reach of one another.

Service here was particularly memorable. The team quickly learn your name, and communication is seamless. A message from the butler might suggest afternoon tea on the jetty or confirm details for the next day’s island excursion.

Exploring the national park was a highlight. Climbing up on Padar Island and looking out over its sweeping bays and jagged islands was amazing. We saw Komodo dragons in their natural habitat and enjoyed excellent snorkelling in clear, warm water. After a full day in the sun and salt water, returning to the bay for a late afternoon swim or a massage by the sea feels like the right way to end the day.

For clients who don’t want to do a full liveaboard, staying here and heading out on private day trips is a very comfortable way to experience the islands.

Planning a Journey with Plataran Indonesia

What impressed me most was the consistency at Plataran. The landscapes changed dramatically, from temple plains to volcanic highlands to open sea, but the service remained personal and attentive throughout. Staff remembered names, preferences and plans without it ever feeling formal. There is an ease to each property, even in destinations that involve early starts and full days out.

Indonesia suits travellers who are curious and comfortable with contrast. Moving from Borobudur to Bromo and on to Komodo shows just how varied one journey can be. For anyone considering a deeper exploration beyond Bali, this route through Java and Komodo, paired with stays at Plataran, works extremely well.

If Indonesia is on your list, we would be delighted to tailor a journey through Java and Komodo around your interests.
