Sand River Selous

Sand River Selous is a small yet vibrant safari lodge in the northern part of Nyerere National Park. Set on a sweeping curve of the great Rufiji River, it has been both an expedition base and a safari retreat loved by safari enthusiasts for years.

Accommodation is in spacious open-fronted cottages raised on the banks of the Rufiji River. There are five Riverside rooms and three Hillside Suites, all of which have en suite bathrooms with flush loos, powerful showers and hot and cold running water. The suites also have a small plunge pool and a large living space.

The main mess is spacious, open fronted and cool. There’s a chill out area near the library and acres of places to enjoy the delicious cuisine, freshly made by the exceptional chef. The main swimming pool is the perfect spot from which to enjoy a relaxing dip after a dusty game drive.

Location & Getting There

Set on a sweeping curve of the great Rufiji River in the northern part of the vast Nyerere National Park, Sand River Selous is a 45-minute flight from Dar es Salaam followed by a 20-minute road transfer from Kiba airstrip.

Accommodation

The lodge has just 8 stone thatched cottages, comprising 5 Riverside rooms and 3 Hillside suites. All are open-fronted and perched on banks of the Rufiji with amazing views across the river. Riverside rooms feature large ensuite bathrooms with powerful showers, while the Hillside suites have all the above, including a large living space and a private plunge pool.

Activities

The lodge is at the centre of a natural melting pot of very diverse habitats – gorges to open plains, woodland and lakes. Tanzania’s best safari guides will take the guests out on adventures such as boating on the Rufiji up to Kidai Island, game drives on the trail of lions or wild dogs, elephant bush walks, a night sleeping under the stars, fishing in solitude, or just chilling barefoot off a river rock.

Children

Children aged 8 and above are welcome, but only those over the age of 12 can take part in fly camping and game walks.
